Triple Crown Leadership – Miguel Caberra

Miguel Cabrera has won the 2012 Triple Crown  for Major League Baseball. A feat that  very few men in history can lay claim. The attributes of a winning a Triple Crown in baseball can be applied to your life and leadership skills.

America’s national pastime as the first player in nearly half a century to win the triple crown, leading the American League in home runs (44), batting average (.330) and runs batted in (139).  The New YorkTimes, John Eligon 10/3/12

1. Miguel Cabrera had the best batting average so can you.

His team and coaches could count on him throughout the year to be consistent in his performance. You too can be consistent in all you do.  Doing what you are supposed to do has rewards.  When you are consistent you eliminate problems.

2.  Runs batted in show his ability to help others

Everyday you should look for someone to help.  Make it part of your mission to help others at work and home score. The world loves a team player even when it comes at a “sacrifice” to you. This is what Cabrera did by hitting so his team could score.

3. Have home run power

By being the home run champion Cabrera let the team and the opponents know that he was serious about moving forward.  You too can knock it out of the park if you work on what you are good at doing.  Look for something you do well and perfect that skill until you are a home run hitter.

I’m taking my time. I feel much more confident, and every day I feel like I’m getting better.
Miguel Cabrera

How are you developing your Triple Crown attributes?

The London Olympics shows how to Trust your training

London Olympics Gymnast Danell Leyva won a bronze medal at the London Games because he learned to trust his training. He and his father had a ritual that included a pull of the ears and a kiss on the head and then his father would say trust your training. This ritual struck me as wonderful on many levels. Here are three observations that you can use in your everyday life.

1. Having a relation with a Father-figure/Mentor is key to success

The man we saw jumping jubilantly at the London Olympics was Yin Alverez, Danell’s step-father. Which demonstrates that no matter what the situation there is someone there that can help us succeed. Find a mentor and submit to their teachings. The other unique thing is that Alverez was on the floor as Danell’s coach,I think this has a direct correlation to why he was the only man to have an individual medal.

2. Public affection strengthens bonds

These two men have no problem showing that they care for each other. You may not go as far as a kiss but think of the goodwill President Obama got when he and the First lady engaged in a kiss-cam moment. Let those around know that you care. Even a sincere direct thank you with a meaningful handshake goes a long way toward solidifying business relationships. One of the last things my father said before he passed away was “come over here and give me a kiss”. I still remember the quiet joy in his feeble eyes. Do not wait so long to show you care.

3. Trust you training

This is significant in all of our lives. The first thing you must do to trust your training is train. And I mean train consistently. To reach the London Olympics Danell Leyva had to train constantly. If you are going to reach Olympic status in your career or relationship you will have to train for your time on the big stage. The last reminder right before each event by Alverez cemented in his son’s mind that he was ready for this moment by saying “trust in your training”.

Please leave a comment on how you the London Olympics can inspire you to trust your training on a daily basis?

Are you dissatisfied with mediocrity?

http://www.flickr.com/photos/oskarn/I was jogging the other morning, and when I say jogging I should amend this to trudging along. As I finished what had been my normal routine for a while I told myself I could do more. When I thought about it I could do a lot more. I chided myself and said “I am dissatisfied with mediocrity.” This may seem strange for someone who has exercise in their normal routine, so judge yourself on your own curve. My routine was mediocre for me. I was not challenged at all. So I continued to run and added more distance and speed to my workout. Then it hit me that I lived most of by trudging along. All the times that I could improve I chose to accept the status quo. Seth Godin in a blog post titled “The False choice of mediocrity” says

“Remarkable work is always not on the list, because if it was, it would be commonplace, not remarkable.”

Following is the definition of mediocrity and mediocre to add clarity to the sentiment.

me•di•oc•ri•ty
1. The state or quality of being mediocre.
2. Mediocre ability, achievement, or performance.
3. One that displays mediocre qualities

me•di•o•cre
Moderate to inferior in quality; ordinary

The last word of the definition is ordinary and that sums up many facets of our lives and we should strive for extraordinary. Now you have to decide what areas of your life does mediocrity has a strangle hold on and then shake it off. The difference between dominating and participating is small but significant. Decide to be great. The Bible has a take on this subject as well.

Revelation 3:15-18 I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.
16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.
17 Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:
18 I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire,

Because most of us live an okay lifestyle we rarely challenge ourselves and with even more scarcity do we put our ideas and efforts in the fire to be tired like gold.

What are you areas of your life are you going to denounce mediocrity and set in the fire?

Operate in your gift

In Genesis 2v8 the Bible it states “And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the Garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it”. This is how you should live your life. You are given a gift that will make your life simple. There is very little hard work if you operate in the particular realm where God placed you. You will have to put forth effort but it will not seem laborious to you. With many ways to start a business venture the most feasible and effective direction for that business is an avenue that operates in your natural gift. Find the thing you enjoy and have a high aptitude towards and develop that talent. Proverbs 18v16 states “A man’s gift maketh room for him, and bringeth him before great men.” Only think on the talents and business ventures that will propel you forward while operating in your gift.

What is an example of you operating in your gift?

Do not spend too much time in the Middle

This topic seems a little counterintuitive to the usual topics we explore but it is just as important. Many days while I am practicing patience I realize action is necessary. The beginning starts with an event or a decision and the end is result whether positive or negative. The middle is where the fun occurs and where you can get lost.

1. Stay with the rational decision you made in the beginning
You should make a decision early and stick with it. Every time that you waiver on a decision it is tough for those involved with you to continue to respect your decisions. It is also an area where time is consumed. Reclaim your time by making up your mind.
James 1:8 A double minded man is unstable in all his ways

2. The middle is where the fun occurs
Always look for opportunities to have fun. Frequently, fun involves work and it can make for some odd kinds of diversion but in all you do enjoy yourself. If you are building a business take heart in the little enjoyments that happen day-to-day. Be thankful for the life you are given and the blessings that surround you.

3. No one really wants to go on vacation, we want to BE on vacation
This is the sentiment that comes from the kids, “Are we there yet?” By continuing to point to the future without really believing there is one is disingenuous. Get where you going as fast as possible so that you can enjoy the results of your labor. Make no excuses work as if your life depended on it. Fix your mistakes and make no apologies for your success. Enjoy your time in the sun.

How are you going to get out of the middle?

What to do while you wait

The following is an opening for a chapter in my upcoming book, let me know what you think. The statement, “Occupy until I come,” is taken directly from the bible. The quote from Luke 19, verse 12 and 13, is “A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return. And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come.” Patient ability describes what to do while obtaining patience. This chapter gives examples of human nature while pursuing dominance. The entire passage from Luke is used to demonstrate the rewards of occupying (performing transactions repeatedly) while gaining Patient Ability. This principle contains examples and vivid illustrations of patience. Most motivational books are “rah-rah” cheering books; there are certain aspects of upbeat encouragement throughout this principle. The main premise of Patient Ability is to demonstrate that in any worthwhile journey, there are aspects of continued endurance that propel you to success. This principle gives practical advice for lasting victory. Separate phases are outlined for gaining ability while building a crescendo to dominating life.
Patient Ability is the principle in which we must take a self test and determine our valuable attributes. One must honestly dig deep into what makes himself tick. This is the point where we take off the gloves. You must pull back the veil. There are plenty of things you may be good at doing; however, in order to reach your ultimate goals, you must uncover your true, great talent and develop it. You must determine your limitations. What should you do while being patient? We all want to hunt; however, knowing how to gather is a very important aspect of increasing your ability. The real impact makers know how to gather people, resources, and energy.

You are standing on the shoulders of others

• You are not the first to take this journey
• Your foundation and heritage are strong and sure
• Faith and patience are cumulative

Those that came before us built bridges from lack to abundance the foundation of which is forged with their physical and emotional souls. People in your own family that gave every ounce of energy to educate, shelter and propel you to the next level may not have had the level of free expression that you enjoy. You lean on those who promoted your goals and dreams above their own. Show gratitude to those pillars that have directly supported you by continuing to pursue your highest dreams. Some dreams need more reinforcement than others and lofty vision needs patient contractors. After the foundation has settled the contractor must test the strength of the concrete. Our concrete is made of people who had vision for a world free from hindrances to individual joy. All dreams and goals combine to benefit your heritage. The royalty of your culture expects you to represent with passion and regality. When your faith needs increasing look to past champions for inspiration. The Bible gives us some examples of those who through faith and patience inherited the promise but Abraham is one of my favorites because we can see evidence of God’s promise still working in present day Israel and all the riches bestowed on the seed of Ishmael. While gaining inspiration from faith champions and applying your current faith, no gap is too large to overcome. Slow your breathing consider well your task and exercise a patient mind because you are not alone.

Unite with faith and patience and unite with the world.
